Everything about this place is fantastic. The beer, the staff, the location - awesome. I'm a native of the area but have since moved away to the magical beer-laden Pacific Northwest city of Portland, Oregon, and it was so great to meet people as fanatical and genuinely knowledgeable about beer as the manager, Rich, and staff member, Adam.
From complex and robust IPAs and hefeweizens to the ol' tried-and-true Genny Cream Ale, Grand Central Discount Beer offers myriad styles of beer for any palate. Options are unlimited, as you can select single bottles as well as make your own six-packs. They also offer kegs. We found several beers that sounded very appealing but just couldn't commit to buying them based on the literature on the bottle, so we were even given samples - "try before you buy" doesn't happen everywhere, people. Keep in mind, you can't sample everything in the store (for obvious reasons), but what a great way to do business.
The staff was very well-educated on just about every beer we had questions about and definitely gave us MORE than the time of day in helping us find something that would be sure to satisfy. When you offer domestics, imports, AND the hundreds of new microbrews that are as popular as ever, this is hard to do, but they did a wonderful job. One of the best things about the craft beer industry today is that everybody in the U.S. is getting their hands into it, including the Elmira/Horseheads area. Stopping by this place not only gives you the opportunity to try something other than that nasty Bud Light in the bottom of your fridge but also allows you to support new local businesses and breweries - everybody wins!
Stop by on your way home from work, pick up a keg before the game, whatever - just come by and see what they have to offer and you can thank me later. Friends don't let friends drink crap beer.
